"Her first novel was The Dark Shore (1965). She published several other "gothic" novels before she turned to the first of her family sagas, Penmarric (1971) , which details the fortunes and disputes of the Penmar family in Cornwall during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. An important theme of the story is how the mansion of Penmarric becomes controlled by various branches of the family. The family fortune was made in the Cornish tin mining industry, which is discussed throughout each one of the six parts, each with a different character as narrator. As is made clear by the chapter headings, the fortunes of the family closely parallel the Plantagenet family, including Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine, with the mansion representing the throne. It was adapted into a television series with the same name in 1979. " (from Wikipedia). Very Good .

New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1978. 1st American Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. ISBN: 0385129882. Remainder. This book is in Very Good+ condition and has a Very Good dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The spine ends of the book covers have some beginning bumping. The text pages are clean and bright. The bottom edge of the text block has purple remainder speckling. There are a couple of small chips to the bottom spine end of the book cover. The reverse of the dust jacket has generalized foxing. "Lofts was born in Shipdham, Norfolk in England, and died in 1983 in Bury St Edmunds. She also wrote under the pen names Peter Curtis and Juliet Astley. Lofts chose to release her murder-mystery novels under the pen name Peter Curtis because she did not want the readers of her historic fiction to pick up a murder-mystery novel and expect classic Lofts historical fiction. However, the murders still show characteristic Lofts elements. Most of her historical novels fall into two general categories: biographical novels about queens, among them Anne Boleyn, Isabella I of Castile, and Catherine of Aragon; and novels set in East Anglia centered around the fictitious town of Baildon (patterned largely on Bury St. Edmunds). Her creation of this fictitious area of England is reminiscent of Thomas Hardy's creation of "Wessex"; and her use of recurring characters such that the protagonist of one novel appears as a secondary character in others is even more reminiscent of William Faulkner's work set in "Yoknapatawpha County," Mississippi."
